BioGTS Ltd has signed a purchase agreement with Biosairila Ltd concerning the delivery of a biorefinery plant to the City of Mikkeli in Eastern Finland. The biorefinery plant will utilize municipal and agricultural biomass for the production of biogas and fertilizer products. Produced biogas will be upgraded to biomethane and mainly utilized and sold as transportation fuel. The location of the biorefinery plant will be the Metsäsairila waste management company’ site in Mikkeli, Finland.
The production of vehicle biomethane by Biosairila Ltd. will offer an opportunity for car owners to switch to emission-free driving in the area of Mikkeli. The biogas production capacity of the biorefinery will correspond to the annual fuel consumption of more than 1,000 passenger cars. The biogas refueling network will expand already during autumn 2017, once Biosairila Ltd. opens the biogas refueling station in the connection with shopping mall Graani in Mikkeli. At the beginning, the biogas will be produced at the biorefinery of BioHauki Ltd. in Haukivuori.
EU directives require the sorting and recycling of waste materials, and disposal of organic waste in landfills is prohibited. At the moment, Metsäsairila waste management center treats biowaste and sewage sludge at the composting plant, producing soil improvement products utilized in landscaping. In the future, the best value from organic waste will be generated by the production of vehicle fuel and, in addition, residues will be processed into valuable recycled nutrients. The biorefinery to be built also allows the use of landfill gas in the production of vehicle biomethane. The biorefinery enables the separation of the residues to produce organic fertilizers and refine the soil improvement medium.
The construction works of the biorefinery plant will start at Metsäsairila waste management centre’s site during autumn 2017. The plant will be ready to use at the beginning of 2019. Total investment equals to about 9.7 million euros. The biorefinery plant has received the investment grant from the Ministry of Employment and the Economy of Finland in the amount of 3.4 million euros. An international tender was held for the implementation of the project, and based on the bids received, BioGTS Ltd. was selected as the biorefinery provider.
- Biosairila Ltd.’s biorefinery’s main product will be biomethane, which will be mainly utilized as transportation fuel, and fertilizer products. Part of the produced biogas will be liquefied, for example for transportation and industrial use.
- At its full capacity, the biorefinery’s annual output corresponds to the annual fuel consumption of approximately 1,400 passenger cars.
- The construction work of biorefinery will start during autumn 2017 and the plant will start its operation at the beginning of 2019.
